Students dive into enriching experience

POSTED March 8 2024 , News, Senior School

On Wednesday 28 February, 26 students set off on a six-day trip to the Abrolhos Islands.

When we arrived, we were astonished to see the massive four-storey boat that we would call home. We had spectacular visibility during the trip and many memorable, once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

One of the highlights was swimming with seals and watching them play and frolic around us during our morning snorkel, with the sun rising behind us and lighting up the sky.

Another highlight was a dive and snorkel site called ‘Stairway to Heaven’. It is a massive underwater feature surrounded by many different brightly coloured fish species and giant plate corals.

One of the reasons I chose to participate in this trip was my love for the ocean and marine life. I also loved the opportunity to make new friends from varying year groups.

During a night walk along the beach, we had the opportunity to use the UV torches to look at the hidden features of the beautiful coral and rocks. Afterward, we lay down on the sand and stargazed, learning how to read some star patterns. The stars were absolutely spectacular and so bright. It was an extraordinary moment.

We also enjoyed walks to several islands, learning about the Batavia shipwreck during these strolls, and we saw so many interesting animals, like seals, eels, small and giant starfish and many stingrays.

I feel very fortunate to have attended this trip and enjoyed many memorable experiences.
