Science meets Indigenous art and culture

POSTED October 21 2024 , News, Senior School

Our Year 8 students have been diving into Earth Science, discovering the fascinating world of minerals and rocks.

This week, they took their learning to the next level by creating paints from minerals like haematite, magnetite, limonite, and calcite – following techniques used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples for thousands of years.

With their handmade paints, students explored traditional symbols and the dot painting method to create beautiful artworks.

This hands-on activity allowed them to blend history with science, gaining a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Australia. It was a meaningful way to connect scientific exploration with the timeless artistry of Indigenous practices.
