St Mary’s leads the way in sustainable practices

St Mary’s is leading the way in sustainability as the only school in Western Australia to implement an innovative benchtop device that transforms food waste into nutrient-rich organic fertilizer.

This initiative highlights our commitment to environmental stewardship and enriches our students’ learning experiences.

Over the past six months, our Food Technologies students and staff have successfully diverted more than 100 kilograms of food waste from landfill. The device works by breaking down organic waste, which is then converted into fertilizer that can enhance soil quality and promote healthy plant growth.

This hands-on project allows students to learn about the ecological impact of food waste and the benefits of organic fertilizers while encouraging teamwork as they collect and process waste from the school’s kitchens.

It also serves as a platform for discussions on broader sustainability practices, cultivating a sense of responsibility and awareness among students.
